Warren White a great choice – School Committee made fine selection for Acting Supt.

The Winthrop School Committee made an excellent choice in appointing Warren White as the Acting Superintendent of Winthrop schools. The Committee was meeting in executive session Wednesday to discuss the proposed contract for Mr. White and we hope an agreement is reached so he can begin serving as superintendent.

We have known Mr. White for a long-time and found him to be an outstanding educator and tremendous gentleman. He is the former principal of Lynn Classical High School and he did a phenomenal job in all aspects of his administration of the school. He is very personable and was accessible to parents, other administrators, guidance counselors, teachers, and students. He personally helped students gain admission and receive scholarships to college.

Mr. White was an outstanding athlete, having played Division 1 college football. You can be sure that he will be visible at not only Winthrop football games, but other athletic and extracurricular events as well.

While Mr. White’s term as acting superintendent is slated to be five to eight weeks (during Dr. Steve Jenkins’s medical leave), we understand that Mr. White may be asked to stay on board until Dec. 31, 2010 when Dr. Jenkins officially steps down as superintendent. The school system will be in fine and capable hands if Mr. White remains in charge until the end of the current year and beyond if the Committee decides to keep him in the top position while the permanent selection process is ongoing.

We have to commend the Winthrop School Committee for acting quickly and decisively to bring Mr. White on board so there can be a smooth entry into the new school year.
