Calvin Cancian

Retired Accountant

Calvin O. Cancian of Quincy, formerly of Belmont, died on September 14 at the Hancock Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness.

The beloved husband of 31 years to Elaine (Willett) Cancian of Quincy, he was the loving son of the late Ottavio Cancian and Emma (Dahlgren) Cancian and is also survived by many extended family members and close friends.

He was born in Winthrop and spent many years in Belmont before moving to Quincy 31 years ago. An accountant for John Hancock Life Insurance and Blue Cross & Blue Shield, he retired in 1978. He was a Freemason and belonged to several Shriner Lodges, including the Allepo Shriners of Wilmington, the Simon W. Robinson Lodge of Lexington and was a Scottish Rite Mason. He was an avid sports fan and had a great sense of humor.

Carol Wells

Winthrop resident

Carol "Tootsie" (Westphal) Wells of Winthrop died at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on September 11 after complications from pneumonia. She was 70 years old.

She was a former employee of Jeveli’s n East Boston, Building 19 and Winthrop/Revere Homemakers, Inc.

Born and raised in Winthrop, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Westphal and June (Gregory) Greenburg, both of Winthrop; the loving sister of Jeanette "Honey" Burroughs, Arthur "Kid" Westphal, Thomas "Westy" Westphal and the late Edward "Brother" Westphal, all of California; the devoted and loving mother of the late John "J.D." DePalma of East Boston, Theresa McIntosh of Beverly, Patricia Wells and Roy Wells, both of Winthrop; the adoring grandmother of Carole Wells of Winthrop, Michael Wells of Lynn and Jessica DePalma of East Boston. She also leaves one great grandchild, her "Little Darling" Carlin Brown of Winthrop. She will be greatly missed by all.

Memorial Services for Mrs. Wells and her son, John DePalma, will be held at the Union Congregational Church, 22 Tewksbury St., Winthrop on Saturday, September 18 at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited. Paolina Mellone

East Boston resident

Paolina ( Parisi ) Mellone of East Boston died on September 12 in her 102nd year.

She was the beloved wife of the late Giovanni Mellone with whom she shared 40 years of marriage; loving mother of Anna Pisaturo and her husband, Joseph, and Damiano Mellone, all of East Boston, and the late Alfonso Mellone and his wife, Catherine ( Pisaturo) Mellone, of Revere; dear sister of the late Rosa and Palma Parisi; cherished grandmother of three and great grandmother of six.

Her Funeral will be held from Vazza’s "Beechwood" Funeral Home, 262 Beach Street, Revere, today, Thursday, at 9 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St Anthony’s Church Revere at 10 o’clock. John Kilmartin

Delta Airlines retiree, member of Friends of Belle Isle Marsh

John J. Kilmartin of Winthrop Street, Winthrop died at home on September 9 following a long illness. He was 80 years old.

Mr. Kilmartin was born in Rosscommon, Ireland, the son of the late Michael and Mary (Quigley) Kilmartin. He worked for Delta Airlines for 36 years, retiring in 1985, and was a member of the Friends of Belle Isle Marsh.

He was the beloved husband of Nancy (Staunton) Kilmartin, devoted father of John Kilmartin Jr. of Newport News, VA., Maureen Demers of Methuen, Robert of Santa Monica, CA, Annemarie Murray and Kevin Kilmartin of Winthrop; brother of Michael, Joseph, William and Anna Beirne of Ireland and the late Mary Rolands and Patrick Kilmartin; dear grandfather of Stephanie, Michael and Brian Kilmartin, Elizabeth, Thomas and Jason Demers and Grania and Aiden Murray. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
