Mike Mason: Former WHS Star will be Fondly Remembered

Family members and friends paid a final farewell to former Winthrop High School All-Scholastic quarterback and three-sport captain Michael Mason, who died last week at the all too-young age of 36. Mike was the quarterback of the 1992 WHS team that played in the Super Bowl at Miller Field and lost to Mansfield. He went on to play football and baseball at Bentley.

Mike was a great guy and loved by all who knew him. His lifelong friend, Joe Ferrara, delivered a beautiful eulogy at the funeral that captured the essence of what a great person, uncle, brother, and friend he was.

Many people paid their respects at Mike’s wake and funeral Mass, including his former football coach Tony Fucillo. In a small community such as ours, the passing of a person of Mike’s youth and stature touched many of us, including those of us at the Sun Transcript. We wrote about his athletic exploits and snapped his picture week after week while he was at Winthrop High, and his sister Karen was our high school news reporter.

There is a saying from the ancient Greeks, “Those whom the gods love die young,” and that never was more appropriate than for Mike Mason.

We offer our condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.
