Ekidat, Ascolillo Pace WHS Boys Track Team

Although the Winthrop High boys track team dropped a 75-41 decision to Lynn English last Thursday, a number of Vikings turned in outstanding performances for first year head coach Dennis Floyd’s squad.

Senior Jordan Ekidat was a double winner for Winthrop, capturing the long jump with a leap of 20-10 and the 400 meter dash in a time of 55.0, a feat that was all the more impressive because it was Jordan’s first time competing in that event. Ekidat added another point onto the Winthrop side of the scoresheet with a third place finish in the 100 dash in 11.6 to give him 11 points on the day.

Sophomore Rob Ascolillo also enjoyed a fine meet, taking first in the 100 meter high hurdles in 20.8 and second place finishes in the 400 low hurdles in 71.0 and the triple jump with a landing of 32-4.75.

Other first place finishers for Winthrop were sophomore Dave Gallo with a discus toss of 79-2.5 and junior Pat Brogan in the mile in 5:22.

Second place efforts were turned in by soph Jimmy Barker in the javelin with a throw of 121-3 and fellow soph Nick Floyd in the 800 in 2:28.4.

Adding single points to the Winthrop scoresheet with third place performances were Barker in the 200 dash; Brian Manning with a triple jump of 31-4.75; Floyd with a leap of 16-3 in the long jump; and Trevor Hetherton in the 100 hurdles in 23.5.

Floyd and his squad will meet Revere today (Thursday) and Gloucester next week. He will bring his talented freshman and sophomore contingent to the NEC Freshman/Sophomore Meet in Lynn on Saturday.
