Working the polls on Tuesday were from left: Linda Cramer, Tino Capobianco, Donna Segreti Reilly, and Carol Walker.

Winthrop resident Valentino Capobianco was elected in the First Suffolk and Middlesex Senate District race for Democratic State Committeeman Tuesday.

Capobianco, a 23-year-old graduate of Winthrop High School and Suffolk University, received 712 votes in Winthrop while his opponent received 73. Capobianco won in Revere by a decisive 704-154 margin.

In the district that also includes parts of Cambridge and Boston, Capobianco received a total of 2,185 votes while Roosevelt received 903 votes. Roosevelt is the great-great-grandson of President Theodore Roosevelt.

“I’m very excited about being elected,” said Capobianco. “A lot of my friends and young voters turned out and I’m grateful to them and all of the people of Winthrop. I want to thank the voters and Speaker Robert DeLeo.”

Capobianco conducted a well-organized and vigorous campaign, going door-to-door in Winthrop, mailing out “Dear Friend” cards, and advertising in the Sun-Transcript. Friends, family, and supporters held “Capobianco” signs at the polls on Election Day.

Capobianco will take office at the next Democratic State Committee meeting.

Denise V. LoConte of Winthrop was unopposed in her bid for Democratic State Committeewoman.

In the State Republican Presidential Primary in Winthrop, Mitt Romney received 800 votes while Rick Santorum was second with 114 votes. President Barack Obama, who is unopposed for the Democratic nomination, received 581 votes.

There were 1,952 votes cast in Winthrop. The election process went smoothly as the town used the Senior Center (along with the Winthrop Middle School gymnasium) as a polling location for the first time.
