Farmers Market Committee Seeks Expansion

The Winthrop Farmer’s Market Committee is looking to add volunteers as it prepares to expand its schedule of market dates in 2015.

“We had eight Farmers’ Markets this year and we’d like to add up to two next year,” said Joseph Domelowicz Jr., assistant to town manager James McKenna.

Domelowicz said the committee is seeking status as a registered non-profit organization. If that status is granted, the committee would hold elections for officers and board members.

The Farmer’s Markets were a huge success this summer, attracting sizable crowds to French Square. Six farms were represented at each Market, with some of the farms appearing at multiple events.

Domelowicz said seven different musicians performed at the events. Twenty-eight individual non-food vendors participated in the Markets. Three food trucks sold their products. Seven non-profit organizations were given free booths at the Markets.

“The weather really cooperated,” said Domelowicz. “We only had rain at one event.”

The 2015 Markets’ schedule will likely begin in late June and continue through early October. The Markets were held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. every other Sunday this summer.
