Winthrop Pays Tribute To Veterans

Winthrop paid tribute to its war veterans this week in impressive fashion commencing with Winthrop Center Cafe owner Roger Oliveira hosting a dinner for veterans at his cafe that was sponsored by American Legion Post 146. The Winthrop Chamber of Commerce, led by executive director Betsy Shane and president Dr. Paul McGee, invited veterans to its breakfast meeting with town Veterans Agent Roseann Trionfi-Mazzuchelli appearing as the guest speaker at the breakfast. The Chamber then held a flag ceremony in French Square.

The town’s annual Veterans Day Program on the town lawn was well-attended as Roseann put together an outstanding program that recognized those who served our country. Speaker of the House Robert A. DeLeo, State Sen. Anthony Petruccelli, and Council President Peter Gill honored the veterans with their heartfelt remarks, while Lieutenant Governor-Elect Karyn Polito also helped make it a special observance for our veterans. Principal speaker, U.S. Air Force captain Lisa Larity, delivered an excellent speech that really exemplified what this important day symbolizes to all Americans.

The observance continued at the corner of Bowdoin Street and Madison Avenue where the town dedicated a square in honor of the five Bachini brothers of Winthrop who served in World War II, along with their brother-in-law William McIntyre. It’s a much-deserved tribute to this amazing family who lived in a house at the intersection that will now bear their name. We commend the town for recognizing these brothers’ service to our country with the honor of having a sign at the intersection that will forever signify their gallant service to our nation in a time of conflict.
