To The River

By Jim Lederman

The Annisquam River runs at the end of the Newell Stadium Facility. A Gloucester tradition is for the loyal Gloucester Fishermen fans the change ‘To the River’ is shouted when the Fishermen have first and goal at the end zone next to the Annisquam.

Friday night the Fishermen scored five touchdowns at the River End. The 2015 NEC South Champions finished the season undefeated in league play, crushing the Vikings (41-7) on Friday night.

Gloucester finished with a (5-6) record in 2014. Fifteen seniors led Gloucester to the NEC title in 2015.

The spectacular new $3.8 million New Balance Track and Field at Newell Stadium is another ‘jewel’ on the North Shore. The artificial turf field can be used for football, soccer, field hockey and other sports. The press box is heated and is one of the best for a high school stadium.

The capacity is 2,250 and Gloucester will fill the stadium for many years.

The stadiums many funding sources, including the $500,000 contribution from New Balance, public and private grants, do nations from private individuals, $1.5 million bonding from the city of Gloucester, $500,000 from the Park and Acquisitions and renovations for communities program, which is funded federally and distributed by the state. (Attention Speaker of the House Robert A. DeLeo).

The Gloucester Fishermen Associations (Viking Pride Foundation) led an effort that produced $300,000 from small donors and fund raising.

The Gloucester football team, which won the super bowl titles in 2007, 2009 and 2010 – has a new turf field on which to make another playoff bid.

A new Lynnfield turf stadium, a $7.5 million new Harry Della Russo Stadium. They can do it in Revere, Gloucester and Lynnfield. We need the entire proud Winthrop Community to support a new Miller Field!

Let the Games Begin!

Gloucester Fishermen sink the Viking ship

The Winthrop Vikings first trip to the new Newell Stadium in Gloucester was not a memorable one. The Fishermen undefeated (5-0) NEC south champions, ran away from the Vikings (4-6) 41-7 on Friday night.

The weather conditions are always tough in Gloucester in November. The game time temperature was 50 degrees. The Fishermen’s patterned wing t-offense is built for the fast turf field.

The Fishermen struck quickly, on their first offensive play Christian Sanfillipo swept the Vikings left end for a 28-yard touchdown. Alex Millitello kicked the extra point; Gloucester (7-0) early in the second quarter Millitello took a reverse and exploded on a 40-yard touchdown run.

Senior Andrew Latassa punched one in from the 1-yard line and another Millitello kick gave Gloucester a (21-0) halftime advantage. First half statistics Gloucester 195-yards – Winthrop 83.

San Fillipo scored his second touchdown on a 13-yard run and the extra point increased the Fishermen lead to (28-0).

Co-captain Mike Cody passed to John Philpott and the kick failed (34-0) Gloucester at the end of the third quarter.

Kevin Gabriele scored the final Gloucester touchdown (41-0) Fishermen.

The highlight of the night for Viking fans who journeyed up to Gloucester was a 69-yard run for a Winthrop touchdown by junior Taylor St. George. He exploded up the middle and outraced the Fishermen secondary. Calvin Tufa kicked the extra point (41-7).

The last time I was at Manning Field in Lynn was on Labor Day morning, the temperature was 90 degrees. The St. Mary ‘s Spartans were impressive in the fin al pre-season scrimmage. Friday night St. Mary’s captured the Division 5 title, defeating Greater Lowell (44-16).

Friday night Melrose and Danvers will play for the Division 3 title.

Manning has been the site for many tournament games and this week will be the field for four state soccer championships.

The facility is the premier field in the north. Last year the Lady Vikings played Georgetown in the North soccer championship game. We all look forward to the Vikings football team playing in a championship game at Manning Field.

Skimming the Sidelines

Danvers (8-2) defeated Marblehead (13-6) at Piper Field in Marblehead Friday night to win the Division 3 Northeast title.

The Falcons will play Melrose (10-0) Northwest champion. Melrose on Friday night 7 p.m. at Manning Field in Lynn.

Falcons senior running back Danny Lynch ran for 252-yards and scored both Falcon touchdowns.

Marblehead won the NEC North title and won a thrilling (29-27) overtime victory over Danvers in week 5 at Marblehead.

Danvers lost starting quarterback junior Matt Andreas on the sixth play of the opening drive. He was replaced by junior Dean Borders. The two standouts will return in 2016 for the Falcons. Garrett Keough tossed a 23-yard touchdown to Manning Sears with 32 seconds left in the third quarter. Garrett has 21 touchdown passes this year with one game to play. The Magicians and Big Blue will play their 110th game in the long rivalry on Thanksgiving. The teams are tied with 51 wins; there have been 7 ties in the series.

The Revere Patriots (7-3) defeated Lynn English (4-6) 24-6 at Della Russo Stadium.

Swampscott improved to (4-6) with a (28-27) victory over Hamilton Wenham.

Newburyport defeated the Saugus Sachems (2-8) 49-6 under the temporary lights at Stackpole Field in Saugus.

The 5-4 WHS football team will meet a 3-5-1 Revere squad on Thanksgiving Day. Both teams will feature high-powered running attacks. Winthrop has won 18 of the past 20 Turkey Day tilts and holds a commanding 36-25-3 lead over Revere in the series.

The annual Powder Puff football game between the WHS senior class and a group of Alumni ended in a brawl with four minutes remaining in the third quarter. Prior to the game-ending scuffle, fans were treated to a comical half-time cheering performance by a group of not-ready-for-prime time male members of the Class of 1996. There also were presentations made to the WHS fall athletes at the half. The lone touchdown of the contest before it was called came on a run by Tracey Gigliello that gave the WHS team an 8-0 lead.

Winthrop will be  alight favorite to defeat Revere in the annual Thanksgiving Day classic between the two rivals. The WHS football team, which started the season so promisingly but which now stands at 4-4 after losing its last three games, rates as a heavy underdog to a Revere team that stands at 5-1-2  when the teams meet in their annual clash on Thanksgiving Day. Revere boasts one of the heaviest lines in the schoolboy ranks this season. A key factor for Winthrop all be the status of 6-3, 220-pound, two-way player Ron Miles, who plays tight end and middle linebacker. Miles has been on the sidelines for the past two games with an injury for the first time in his three-year career.

Revere will be led by their star captain, Jerry Sarno, a 170-pound dynamo who led Revere to a 12-6 win in the 1944 contest, while the Winthrop offense will be led by quarterback Jackie Talcott and halfback Milton “Bomber” Neal. A high-scoring game is expected with Revere rated as a big favorite. More than 5000 fans are expected to jam Miller Field for the battle.
