Libero Laura

Decorated veteran and Commodore of Winthrop Yacht Club for more than 60 years

Libero L. Laura, a longtime resident of Winthrop, passed away on April 13. He was 96 years old.

“Lee” a graduated with the Class of 1939 from Winthrop High School. In 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served as a waist gunner on B17 Bombers. He was credited with 27 missions over Eastern and Central Europe and received the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, two Bronze Stars and the Air Medal with Two Leaf Clusters. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

After the war, Lee worked for many years at the Boston Naval Shipyard and the General Electric River Works in Lynn. Lee was an avid yachtsman and a member and Commodore of the Winthrop Yacht Club for over sixty years. He was also the Commodore of the Mass. Bay Association during the Bicentennial Year of 1976. He was a member of the Commodores Club of America and the Beachmont VFW Post 6712.

The devoted husband of the late Raphael (Scanzillio) Laura, he was predeceased by his brothers, Bruno and Domenic Laura and a sister, Margaret DePari. Lee is survived by his children, Barbara and Jerry Manfra of Saugus, Geraldine and Robert Gatchell of Revere and Paul Laura of Winthrop;; his grandchildren, James and Felicia Nestor of Reading and Paul Nestor of Winthrop and his canine pets, Jack and Bailey.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Joseph R. Frazier Funeral Home, Winthrop. Interment was at the Belle Isle Section of the Winthrop Cemetery.

Frances Brill

Of Peabody, formerly of Winthrop

Frances (Abrams) Brill of Peabody, formerly of Winthrop, entered into rest on April 2 at the age of 94.

The beloved wife of the late Myer Brill, she was the devoted mother of Rabbi Michael Brill, Cheryl Brill, the late Jacquelyn V. Crothers and the late David P. Brill and the loving sister of Dr. Ronald Abrams of Maryland. She was predeceased by her siblings: Barney Abrams, Alan Abrams, Louis Abrams, Ann Kramer, Mona Radonsky, Arlene Ratner, Gloria Frank, Charlotte Blonder and Estelle Garr. She was the cherished grandmother of Jennifer Zeuli, Jessica Dacus, Beth Crothers, Joni Boroda and step-granddaughter Jenny Pedro; beloved great-grandmother of Will Dacus, Alden Dacus, Cordelia Zeuli, Itta Chana Boroda , Kobi Boroda, Shaina Boroda, Brittany Pedro and Eric Pedro.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Stanetsky-Hymanson Memorial Chapel, Salem. Interment was at New Tifereth Israel of Winthrop Cemetery, Everett. A memorial observance was held at the home of Cheryl Brill following the interment. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to a charity of your choice.

Tiersa Horan

Of Winthrop

Tiersa K. Horan of Winthrop died suddenly and unexpectedly on April 10. She was 41 years old.

The beloved daughter of Judith Bouldin of Hull and the late Dr. John J. Horan, she was the loving sister of Lea M. Horan of Worcester and Ragin K. Horan of Massachusetts and the dearest love of Edward McLean of Winthrop. Tiersa is also lovingly survived by many relatives and friends. Her dog, Sammy, will miss her love and companionship.
