LEGISLATIVE LUNCHEON ON MONDAY

The Winthrop Chamber of Commerce and the Winthrop Lodge of Elks  is hosting a Legislative Luncheon with Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo and State Sen. Joseph Boncore, both Winthrop residents will update attendees on legislative issues and plans for the rest of the year and beyond. The luncheon will be held at the Winthrop Lodge of the Elks, 191 Washington Ave., Winthrop starting at 12 noon. RSVP by Friday, July 15 by calling (617) 846-9898.

SCHOOL BUILDING COMMITTEE RE-APPOINTED

In conducting some end of the fiscal year business the Town Council re-appointed the School Building Committee for another year to continue with the follow-up with construction of the new Winthrop High School Middle School.

Co-chairs will be Mary Lou Osborne, town representative; Dave Dockendorf, architect and citizen representative; Mike Perez, CFO Town of Winthrop; Rich Cifuni, director of facilities; Karin Chavis, Citizens Finance Committee; Matt Crombie, high school principal; Vincent Crossman, citizen representative; Robert DiMento, citizen representative; Barbara Flavin, citizens finance committee; Monica Ford, treasurer; Paul Giella, citizen representative; David Girard, citizen representative; Richard Lawton, citizen representative; James Letterie, town council; John Macero, superintendent of schools; James McKenna, town manager; Gary Skomro, citizen representative; Frank Woods, curriculum director; and Ron Vecchia, citizen representative.

FAMILY DAY AT THE BEACH

Come to Yirrell Beach on July 16 11 am to 4 p.m. for family day at the beach. There will be rides, giveaways, food, contests, raffles, music, BBQ. Rain date is July 17. WALK FOR HOPE PLANNED ON SEPT. 10

 The 15th annual Walk of Hope for ALS, a 3.5-mile walk around Lake Quannapowitt in Wakefield to benefit The Angel Fund for ALS Research, will be held on Saturday, September 10.  The event begins with registration at 9 a.m. followed by the start of the walk at 11 a.m.

The Angel Fund for ALS Research is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) research at the Cecil B. Day Laboratory for Neuromuscular Research at UMass Medical Center in Worcester. ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a progressive, always fatal neuromuscular disease which leads to muscle weakness and as it progresses, results in total paralysis and the inability to speak and swallow while the mind and senses remain intact.

Walkers of all abilities are encouraged to participate as individuals or as a team. To register as a walker or to register a team, log-on to The Angel Fund for ALS Research website at www.theangelfund.org or call the organization at 781-245-7070.

Team captains and one guest will be invited to a kick-off meeting on July 21st in Wakefield to discuss the walk and to hear about research updates from renowned ALS research and physician, Dr. Robert H. Brown, Jr. Teams are encouraged to submit their registration before July 21st to be included in this special captain event.

Donations to the Angel Fund for ALS Research can also be made online, or can be sent to The Angel Fund, 649 Main Street, Wakefield, MA 01880. All donations should be made payable to The Angel Fund for ALS Research. To assist its walkers, The Angel Fund for ALS Research has joined FirstGiving.com which enables them to create their own webpage to raise money online. Registered walkers can create their page at www.firstgiving.com/angelfund.
