Warren E. Garrison

Retired Graphic Artist, past member of Winthrop Auxiliary Police,

devoted to St. John’s Episcopal Church

Warren E. Garrison, formerly of Winthrop and Sebago, ME, passed away peacefully at his home in The Villages, Florida, on May 3. He was 86 years old.

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the only child of Russell and Vivian (Gammon) Garrison, he grew up in the tiny hamlet of Quoddy, Nova Scotia, with the Atlantic Ocean just outside the front door and a freshwater lake outside the back door of his family home. He loved the craggy Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia and often fondly reminisced about his childhood spent there with family and friends.  And, like many Canadians, he grew up with a pair of ice skates.

In his 20’s, Warren came to America to live with his aunt and uncle in Winthrop. Winthrop changed his life in several ways. Living this close to Boston, he was able to find work in the printing trade and became a photo engraver and a member of the Graphic Artists’ Union.  He worked at Franklin Engraving in Boston for many years, until his job was replaced by a computer. He then trained for a different career in the graphic arts and was employed by Dennison Manufacturing in Framingham for almost 20 years. He also occasionally filled in for absentee employees at both The Boston Globe and The Record American.

Winthrop was also where he met the love of his life, Gretchen “Dutchie” Garbutt.  They married on July 28, 1956, bought a house on the corner of Bowdoin and Thornton Street, and lived there for 48 years. Warren’s house was indeed his castle and he could frequently be found painting or renovating something. Their two daughters both attended Winthrop Public Schools, and Gretchen was a teacher at the Dalrymple Elementary for many years. Warren also volunteered his time as a member of Winthrop’s Auxiliary Police Department.

A large piece of his life was his devotion to St. John’s Episcopal Church on Bowdoin Street, where he was a member for over fifty years. The first year after he retired, Warren decided to take on a “little project”…he painted the exterior of the church, almost totally by himself!

Warren was the loving husband of Gretchen A. Garrison, father of Janice Robblee and her husband, Roy of Woburn and Heather and her husband, Bryan of Wakefield. He was the grandfather of Erin Flaherty and her husband, Owen Hafferty of Revere, Eugene Flaherty III of Winthrop, Charlie Long of Wakefield and Christina Long of Wakefield and brother-in-law to Robert and Betty Garbutt of Sarasota, FL.  He also leaves many friends and relatives in Nova Scotia and his cat, Mishu.

A Funeral Mass was held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Winthrop  with Father Walter Connelly officiating.  Burial was in the Bowdoin Street section of the Winthrop Cemetery, diagonally across the street from the church, behind the Parish Hall. In Warren’s honor, please consider a donation in his name to the Winthrop Food Pantry, 222 Bowdoin Street, Winthrop, MA 02152
