Gearing Up for A New School Year

By Kate Anslinger

With the first day of school right around the corner, the School Committee is working hard to ensure that the first day runs smoothly. One of the hot topics at the new building is the parking situation. The new school, which houses the high school and the middle school will hold new experience for the students and the parents driving them to school.

Currently there are 80 spots in the back of the building for faculty and staff. Additional parking for students will be available when the construction trailers are removed from the site next to the tennis courts. Once the courts are removed and reconstructed in another location, that will also open up more available spots.

The committee urges students to take advantage of the newly central location of the high school/middle school and walk to school.

“It’s a great way to start the day,” said School Committee Chair Dawn Sullivan. “And the majority of students shouldn’t live too far away now that the school is centrally located.”

Over the past couple of weeks, several students have been in the new building to receive tours and their schedules.

“I’ve never seen a group of students more excited to start a school year,” said School Superintendent John Macero. “Middle school students were so excited to get their schedules. I hope the enthusiasm will stay strong for the whole year.”

While the new school is open for business, there are still 300 items left on the punch list from the school construction, which is estimated to be completed no later than December. The committee is intent on closing out the school project before the Miller Field renovations begin. Until then, the soccer and football teams will continue to practice on Miller Field, however; soccer games will be held at Cellucci Field and football games will be away.

In other news:

• Equipment for the medical career course is in place at the new school. Several students have signed up for the course.

• If you are interested in signing your child up for the bus schedule, please do so at the school they will be attending.

• The new school dedication ceremony will be held on September 22nd at 7 pm.
