Summer Vacation Begins in Winthrop

By Kate Anslinger

This week’s School Committee meeting included a lot of memorable moments, as it was the last for School Superintendent John Macero, before he moves on to his position as the Superintendent of the Stoneham School district.

Macero, who has been known for his role in supporting the Winthrop theater scene, had the fitting honor of handing out awards to the Winthrop Middle School Drama Society for their recent Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild (METG) gold medal win for their production of “Dear Me.” The production was presented on April 29th as part of the METG’s Middle School drama festival where Winthrop Middle School also served as host.

“The Winthrop Middle School Drama Society worked exceptionally hard this year, challenging themselves as actors, technical crew, playwrights and hosts,” said drama teacher, Brittany Daley.

‘Dear Me,’ is a student written production focusing on the changes we all face when crossing the line from “childhood” to “young adult.” Middle School students spent a month writing short scenes and monologues that would create the script for the production.
