WHS girls soccer wins season finale

The Winthrop High girls soccer team celebrated Senior Night in fitting fashion with a 5-1 victory over Lynn English this past Monday evening in their regular season finale.

The Lady Vikings’ members of the Class of 2018, captain Gabby Hinchion, captain Jillian Kfoury, captain Francesca Capone, Micaela Grimes, and Kaitlin Singarella, all were honored for their contributions to the WHS girls soccer program.

Capone (assisted by Emma Carleton and Maura Dorr) scored two goals and added as assist on a tally by Alex Gibbons.

Maura Dorr and Emma Carleton also reached the back of the English net with unassisted goals. Singarella picked up the win in goal.

In three contests last week, the highlight for Winthrop was a come-from-behind, 3-3 tie with Lynn Classical. The Lady Vikings trailed 2-0 at the half, but rallied in the second 40-minutes to finish the game at level, 3-3. Dorr (assisted by Haley McSwiney) and Carleton (assisted by Dorr) scored for Winthrop, with the third goal finding the back of the Classical net on a deflection off a Lynn girl.

“This team never gives up and fought back to score three goals in the second half,” said WHS head coach Tracey Martucci, whose squad finished the year nicely at the .500 mark with an 8-8-2 record. “We have had a great year with our senior leaders. They have been great with the team, and they have all had an amazing bond! We hope to keep this momentum going into the tourney this week.”

Martucci and her crew, who punched their ticket for a Journey to the Tourney earlier in the season with wins over fellow Division 4 schools — and who would have qualified in any event because of their overall .500 record — were expected to learn yesterday (Wednesday) of their seeding and first-round opponent in the D-4 North bracket.

WHS boys soccer concludes season

The Winthrop High boys soccer team concluded its 2017 campaign Saturday at Stoneham, coming out on the short end of a 5-2 decision.

Stoneham sprinted to a 3-0 lead early in the contest, but Viking Jaylin Cordes found the back of the Stoneham net to make it 3-1. Stoneham added another marker before the half ended and upped the count to 5-1 after the intermission before Cordes struck again to for the 5-2 final score.

“We knew this season would be tough, it being only the third year of having a varsity and junior varsity program,” said WHS head coach Kyle Gagin, whose squad finished at 3-14-1. «We also lost 9-10 players from the program over the past two seasons.

“There were many positives though,” Gagin continued, “one being that in the past three years, we have had as many wins as the team did from 2007-2013 (2014 was a JV schedule only). This was also one of the best years we’ve played defensively in the program’s history.

“The great news is that our keeper, Cory Cherico, will return in net for his senior year and our leading goal scorer, Jaylin Cordes, also will be back for his senior year, along with many other starters,” added the coach.

“Sophomores Kevin Dorr, Joe Mahoney and Abdul Hamada all got very good playing time and looked great,” Gagin noted. “Freshmen Josh Flores and John Langone got substantial playing time this year and impressed too. Add that with the fact we have a very strong eighth grade class coming in, I look forward to working with the team in the future and I know they will be hungry for a better season next year.”

Kudos to Danny Ainge for drafting Jason Tatum of the Celtics. Jason is averaging 14-points per game. Markelle Fultz, the 2017 NBA’s number one draft choice of the Philadelphia 76-ers, has been a big failure and is out indefinitely with a right shoulder injury.

Tom Brady is 7-0 vs. Philip Rivers of the Chargers.

Do you remember McMurray Buck, Petersen Lincoln-Mercury, Ocean Ford and Miles Chrysler-Plymouth?

The “old” Boston Patriots barely averaged four wins a season for ten years. They lurched from one temporary home to another. They settled in Foxborough in 1971,the original names of the stadium were Sullivan Stadium and Foxborough Stadium to the new Gillette Stadium.

The undefeated Winthrop Vikings captured the 1983 super bowl in Foxborough.

My favorite sub shops in Winthrop 50 years ago – Lupoli’s and Terries for the best Italian subs.

The best hot fudge sandwiches were Ham’s in Winthrop Center and the Highland Drug Store. Extra hot fudge please!

Skimming the Sidelines

Sal Lupoli leads Division in scoring with 102 points. The Chelmsford high standout is the grandson of ex-WHS player Nick Lupoli (from the Lupoli’s Market fame).

Colin Frary of Swampscott leads Division 5 with 25-touchdown passes.

Matt Severance, Lynn English junior quarterback has tossed 12 touchdown passes. His top receiver Prince Brown has nine touchdowns. This combination will play at the ‘new’ Miller Field in 2018.

Marblehead (8-0) is ranked number 9 in the Boston Globe ‘top twenty’ poll. Lynn English (8-0) is ranked number 18.

Speaking of polls – Karen Guregian’s pro power ratings has Philadelphia Eagles (7-1) number one, followed by the Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams.

Congrats to Everett High coach John DiBiaso for winning his 300th game. John has been coaching for four decades of high school coaching. The Crimson Tide has won 10 super bowl titles. The Tide overwhelmed St. John’s Prep (49-14) on Saturday.

I wonder how many Everett High games Winthrop legend Steve Kostegan has attended. Steve will be at Gillette for Everett’s 11th super bowl title in December? Steve is a Patriots season ticket holder.
