FROM THE PRESSBOX

Extra Points

By: Jim Lederman

Congrats to Calvin Tufa, Viking standout lineman and place kicker. Big Calvin was named to the second team all NEC team. Calvin turned in his cleats and is a member of coach Dave Sacco’s first Viking hoop team.

Lynn English coach Chris Carroll was named NEC Coach of the Year. The Bulldogs finished (10-1) after a (2-8) record in 2016. English placed three players on the NEC first team. Matt Severance, junior quarterback. Prince Brown, a junior wide receiver and senior Jacob Miller, a line backer and offensive lineman. Serverance and Brown will visit Miller Field in 2018.

Swampscott placed two players quarterback Colin Frary and defensive back Isaiah Bascom.

Senior quarterback Elijah Jeffries of Somerville, who committed to the University of Connecticut. Somerville finished (7-4) and won the NEC title in the middle division: Somerville is one of the three that were absorbed form the Greater Boston League into the NEC. Medford and Malden were the other. The fourth team, Everett played an independent schedule in football and will join the NEC in all other sports.

Everett won their 12th Super Bowl title in Division One. When the Vikings won their two Super Bowl titles in 1981 and 1983 they played in Division 2. The Vikings were undefeated in 2006 and won the Super Bowl title in Division 3.

In 1981, the Vikings defeated Walpole in a pre-season scrimmage. When the Vikings defeated Tewksbury (14-0) at Boston College’s Alumni Stadium, Walpole defeated Brockton to capture the Division One Title.

I watched Tampa Bay play last week in the NFL. The Tampa Bay quarter back is Ryan Fitzpatrick. Ryan played at Harvard and his tight end was Adam Senkins, son of ex-Superintendent of Schools Dr. Steve Jenkins. Adam is coaching and recruiting at Central Connecticut State. UNH defeated CCSC in the 1 AA playoffs two weeks ago.

Round the Rim

The Vikings opened the 2017-2018 basketball season on Wednesday night at the new ‘Chris Tsiotos Court.”

David Sacco is in his first year as coach of the Vikings. The Vikings finished (8-12) in 2016 and were the No. 11 seed in Division 4 North. The Vikings lost to St. Mary’s of Lynn in the quarter final round. The Spartans have moved up to Division 3 this year.

“Things are looking real good,” said coach Sacco. “Our practices have been super competitive.”

“We have nine seniors and three juniors on the team.” Key returnees are two Northeastern all stars in seniors Devin Pulsifer and Tay Juan McKenzie. Also returning are senior guards Alex Dernier and David Diaz, and a newcomer junior guard Chrono Washington. Seniors Christian Lyons and John Polino will give the Vikings depth. Football standout Calvin Tufa will help with rebounding.

“In my mind the NEC’s the best league in the state especially with the new additions.” Classical, English, Danvers, Marblehead and Beverly, there is not an easy game on the schedule.

Go Vikings – Good Luck in 2016-2017!

Let the Games Begin!

A Remarkable Year in Sports

The 2017 sports season had many memories. The all-time super bowl comeback by the Patriots.

The Pats trailed Atlanta 28-3 at halftime. Tom Brady led the Pats to a thrilling (34-28) victory and their fifth super bowl title.

Catch of the year – the catch by Julian Edelman in the comeback victory.

The controversy – who is the greatest quarter back of all time. It’s harder and harder to argue that Brady isn’t the Best Quarterback Of All Time.

There is Joe Montana, ex 49ers quarterback, Brady’s idol growing up in California. Joe is still considered the best by some (all in California). Brady has already won nine more playoff games than Montana, while throwing 209 more touchdown passes and 24,399 more yards. Brady is the unassailable ‘Goat’ – Greatest Of All Time.

Brady is the NFL’s TOP Performer, now and forever. Case Closed!

The Bowl Games

From December 16 to January 1st, there are 41-bowl games. From the New Orleans Bowl on Saturday through the college football playoffs on New Year’s Day – Jan. 1, 2018.

The Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, Texas pits TCU vs. Standford. Local interest is strong; TCU has Kenny Hill Jr. at quarterback. His dad Kenny Hill from Lynn was a major league pitcher with St. Louis Cardinals. He is related to former Classical and Boston College quarterback Tony Hill.

The Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium in New York features Boston College vs. Iowa from the ‘Big Ten’ BC is playing in their fifth bowl game in a row. The Eagles are three points underdogs!

In the college playoffs I like Okalahoma and Alabama to advance!

Let the Games Begin!

Where Are They Now?

I was cleaning out my desk last week when I discovered a picture of the 1956 Winthrop junior high school football team. We used to practice at the ‘Pit’, the present site of the Arthur T. Cummings School.

The coaches were Syd Williams (on right) and Paul ‘Doc’ Connor. Can you identify the following players? Billy Levine, Howie Conley, Bob Milne, Tony Martucci, Rich DiMento, Jim Lederman, Jimmy Hurley, Skip Marcella, Jack Kelliher, Billy Adamson, Tim Brannan, Jimmy Lawrence, John Polino, Joe Ciarcia, Rich Poor, Harold Krivan and Billy Cleary.
