Francis Vatalaro

Wells Fargo Bank auditor, member of Winthrop Yacht Club and Eucharistic Minister at St. John the Evangelist Church

Francis M. Vatalaro of Atlantic Street, Winthrop passed away suddenly on Feb. 27. He was 62 years old.

Born in Boston, the beloved son of the late Viola (Principe) and Francis J. Vatalaro, he grew up in East Boston and moved to Winthrop 27 years ago.

At the time of his passing, he was employed as an auditor for Wells Fargo Bank. He was also a member of the Winthrop Yacht Club and a Eucharistic Minister at St. John the Evangelist Church in Winthrop.

He was the devoted husband of Linda (Miraglia) and the loving father of Michael Vatalaro of Winthrop and Lindsay Sulprizio and her husband, Mike of East Boston; the dear brother of Kathleen Ruggiero and her husband, Richard of Randolph; cherished grandfather of Violet and Paisley and the brother in law of Kevin and Donna McGuire of Salem. He is also survived by several loving nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the visitation from the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home, Winthrop on Friday, March 9 from 8 to 11 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church, 320 Winthrop St., Winthrop at 11:30 a.m. Committal will be private.

Thomas Barbuto

Retired auto mechanic; member of Winthrop Elks ands Winthrop AMVETS

Thomas B. Barbuto of Winthrop passed away on March 1. He was 82 years old.

Prior to retirement, Thomas was a self employed auto mechanic. He was also a member of the Winthrop Lodge of Elks 1078 and the Winthrop AMVETS Post 48.

The beloved husband of the late Eileen C. (Murray) Barbuto, he was born in Somerville, the son of the late Guy T. and Rose (Signore) Barbuto. He was the devoted father of Michael Guerra and his wife, Famiko of Japan, Lisa M. Guerra of Winthrop, Danielle A. Marshall and her husband, Shaun of Highlands Ranch, CO, Michele R. Barbuto of Medford and the late Joseph Guerra; dear brother the late Louis and Joseph Barbuto, adored grandfather of 12 and great-grandfather of eight. He was the brother-in-law of Regina Barbuto of Colorado and the late Donna Barbuto and is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements were by the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home, 210 Winthrop St., Winthrop. A Funeral Mass was held in St. John the Evangelist Church-Winthrop, on Wednesday, March 6. Interment was in Winthrop Cemetery (Belle Isle Section).

David Murphy

Retired self-employed commercial cleaner

David R. Murphy of Winthrop passed away on March 1 at the age of 82.

David was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and a member of the former East Boston Knights of Columbus. Prior to his retirement, he was a self-employed as a commercial cleaner and janitorial service provider.

The beloved husband of the late Marie (Palladino) Murphy, he was born in Boston,

the son of the late David and Catherine (Conley) Murphy. He was the devoted father of Susan M. Murphy and her husband, Matthew Buehler of Winthrop and the late Joanne Pinabella; adored grandfather of John F. Arpino and his fiancée, Glenna of Beverly, Christopher A. Arpino of Norwood and Nicole M. Pinabella and her companion, Frankie of East Boston; loving great-grandfather of Alana Marie Arpino and Barrett Terwilliger and the dear brother of the late Marie Park.

Funeral arrangements were by the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home, 210 Winthrop St., Winthrop. A Funeral Mass was celebrated in St. John the Evangelist Church-Winthrop on Wednesday, March 7. Cremation to will follow was private. Memorial donations can be made to the Robert A. DeLeo Senior Center, 35 Harvard St. Winthrop, MA 02152.

Joseph Sheltry

Retired longtime driver for Wonder Bread and member of Union Local 494

Joseph F. Sheltry of Winthrop passed away peacefully on March 2 surrounded by his family.  He was 83 years old.

The beloved son of the late Anna M. (Lamont) and Joseph V. Sheltry, he grew up in the West End of Boston before moving to Winthrop more than 57 years ago. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a driver for Wonder Bread for many years. He was also a U.S. Army veteran reaching the rank of PFC and a member of Union Local 494.

He was the beloved husband of Claire (Yirrell) for 57 years and the dear brother of Kathryn Nolan of Randolph. He was pre-deceased by his daughter, Nadine, his brothers, Paul Sheltry and Brother Alexis, C.S.S.R (George) and his sister, Anne Dooley. He leaves his beloved children: Joseph F. Sheltry of Gales Ferry, CT, Maureen C. Sheltry of Charlestown, and Kenneth F. Sheltry of New Hampshire.  He is also survived by six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several loving nieces and nephews.

The family of Joseph “Sonny” wishes to thank the entire staff at Queen Anne Nursing Home, Hingham with grateful humility for not only the care given to Sonny, but to all of his family.

The funeral was conducted from the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 7 followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church. Interment followed the mass in the Cross Street section of Winthrop Cemetery.
