The Blizzard of 2018, also the third nor-easter of the year that hit Winthrop on Tuesday. Weather folks are predicting another storm for Tuesday into Wednesday next week, but the details aren’t firm yet.
“Our DPW crews kept pace with the snow and, once again, did an outstanding job keeping the streets clear,†said Town Council President Ron Vecchia.
One plow driver could be heard on the police scanner early Tuesday morning saying, “We’ve got a good handle on this. We’re keeping ahead.â€
The weather closed Town Hall on Tuesday and caused a delayed opening on Wednesday.
The town didn’t experience any flooding issues like the previous two storms.
“Mother Nature gave us a break on this one,†Vecchia said. “We did not experience any water issues, thanks to an astronomical low-tide cycle.â€
On Jan. 4, over 13 inches of snow drifted in, and a tidal surge flooded out 70 buildings in town and shut down access to the town from both ends.
Unlike the January “Bomb Cyclone†last week’s storm, tagged Winter Storm Riley, hit hard in areas of the town including Morton Street, Shirley Street, Washington Avenue, Crest Avenue, Pico Street and Revere Street at Short Beach, Point Shirley and more.
During last week’s storm, 38 National Grid customers lost power, but all were restored by Friday.
