Howard Signs Contract as Superintendent

At Monday night’s School Committee meeting, Interim School Superintendent Lisa Howard, signed a contract as the official School Superintendent going forward, following a unanimous decision by the School Committee members.

Superintendent of Schools Lisa Howard signs her contract as School Committee chair Tino Capobianco and the rest of the School Committee look on. In back are members James Fabiano, Susan Swope, Gus Martucci, Jennifer Powell and Town Council President Ron Vecchia.

Effective, March 12, Howard’s annual salary will be $162,000, and increased by 1.5 percent to $164,430 on July 1, 2019, and by 2 percent to $167,718 on July 1, 2020.

“Coming back to the district was certainly something that I always hoped for in the future, and the past eight months have been a pleasure,” said Howard, who spent 23 years working in the Winthrop school district and several years as the Pupil Personnel Director for the Saugus School District. “I’m truly thankful for you agreeing to let me do this.”

Howard replaces former Superintendent John Macero, who was paid $145,000 in his last year. He is now the superintendent of schools in Stoneham.

As superintendent, Howard will be required to prepare goals and objectives and supply them to the School Committee before July 31 of each year. By Sept. 30, the committee must agree to those goals or offer modifications or additions. The committee will then be responsible for evaluating the superintendent every June, ensuring that her performance is measured against the agreed upon goals and objectives.

“Lisa has done an outstanding job as interim superintendent and I am confident she will be successful and move the district forward in a very positive direction.” said School Committee member Gus Martucci.

Howard is a Class of 1985 graduate of Winthrop High School. She graduated with a degree in education from Boston College where she was a member of the Eagles’ Division 1 softball team. She holds a master’s of science in  education from Salem State College.
