Street Sweeping Schedule

The Town of Winthrop conducts Street Sweeping operations on the last full week of the month (last week with a Friday) from April through October between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. on the day of a street’s trash collection. If there is a holiday on the week sweeping would normally occur, sweeping is done a week early.

Town ordinance prohibits parking in a manner that impedes the street sweeper. Violation of the street sweeping ordinance carries a $40.00 fine, and your vehicle can be towed.

May week of the 21

June week of the 25

July week of the 23

Aug. week of the 27

Sep. week of the 24

Oct. week of the 22

 

WIHA presents old medicine program

On Saturday, April 14 from 1  to 3 p.m. Lori Lyn Price, MAS, MLA, from the Partnership of Historic Boston, will present a program on 17th-Century Domestic Medicine. Lori is a professional genealogical speaker who has been working on her personal genealogy for over 15 years. She recently completed a Master’s degree in history, focusing on domestic medicine in 17th-century England and New England. Lori loves sharing her passion for social understanding the social and historical context in which, an ancestor lived brings that ancestor to life. Lori may also advise us on herbs appropriate to our DWH garden plot.

On Saturday, April 28  from 11a.m.to  2p.m.  mark your calendar! We will hold our Annual Arbor Day celebration. Come enjoy this “swing into spring”, with creative kids’ activities in the barn, yummy cherry pie, coffee and plenty of rakes and gloves for sprucing up our lovely grounds. We welcome any small perennials you might have for transplanting ‘’from your yard to our Deane Winthrop yard”.

 

 

What’s Happening at Parks and Rec

NFL Flag Football League At Ingleside Park is holding a placement clinic on Saturday, April 7t at 4 p.m. Players must be registered to participate in the placement clinic.

Programs run April 14 through June 2 on Saturdays between 4 – 8 p.m.

Cost Is $110.00 if registered By March 16 and $135 if registered after March 16.  Ages of participants must be 6 – 14 and must be 6 by April 1, 2017

Pickleball is coming on Wednesday evenings from 7  to 9 p.m. at the Old Middle School Gym, 151 Pauline St.

The program is for adults (men and women) on Wednesday evenings starting on March 14 for eight weeks, at $65. Due to the popularity of this activity, registration is expected to fill up. Register early to guarantee a spot. Online at www.winthroprec.com or at the Recreation office located in the rear of 151 Pauline St. This session, drop ins ($10) will be limited or not at all due to the large number of people interested. Equipment is provided so all you need is pair of sneakers, comfortable clothing and enthusiasm to have fun while getting exercise. No partners needed; everyone will have rotating partners playing opponents of all levels. Join one of the fastest growing sports in the US! Pickleball is  fun sport (with a funny name) that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong using an oversized paddle and perforated plastic ball played both indoors or outdoors on half the size of a tennis court. Originating in Washington State, the game gradually made its way across the country and it’s now in Winthrop. There are over 100 places to play already in Massachusetts. You will find from casual play to competitive tournaments for all levels across the US and Canada.

 

Spring Craft Fair at St. John’s Episcopal Church

St John’s Episcopal Church is welcoming in the spring season with its annual Spring Craft Fair on Saturday March 24, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at 222 Bowdoin St. in Winthrop. Convenient street parking will be available.

The spring line-up will feature new and returning local artisans, over 20 sellers all under one roof. Expect to find one-of-a-kind Easter baskets chock-full of treasures, homemade candies, quilted treasures, traditional and handcrafted jewelry, seaside arts and local artists’ spring decor.

To add to the congenial and welcoming shopping atmosphere, St. John’s will be offering savory café lunches available for purchase, featuring sumptuous chili, a substantial corn and shrimp chowder, plus generous bistro lobster lunches that include kettle chips and a home-baked triple chocolate brownie. To reserve sell-out lobster lunches, please contact Carol at [email protected] or call or text 617-913-5182.

Donate Blood in Honor of Josh Cohen

On Saturday, March 17 at the Odd Fellows Lodge, 196 Winthrop St, Winthrop. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Only months ago Josh was a normal, third-grade boy playing at the nearby park, and now he is fighting for his life against kidney cancer. Without his frequent blood transfusions, he would be gone already. Please donate blood and bring a friend to help him and others in need. Josh and his family, hope to be at the blood drive at the Odd Fellows lodge on March 17. Feel free to come to the lodge to meet this brave and wonderful boy.

Donations can also be made out to the Cohen Family at the Odd Fellows lodge during the blood drive or by mailing a check to 82 Main St., Winthrop, MA 02152.

They have already raised over a thousand dollars in donations to help this family handle unexpected expenses.

There will be pizza donated by Nick’s, and Odd Fellows members will be serving limited amounts of cabbage and corn beef.
