Jean Dunbar

Blue Cross/Blue Shield retiree

Jean C. (O’Neil) Dunbar of Winthrop, passed away on June 19. She was 95 years old.

Prior to her retirement, Jean was employed by Blue Cross and Blue Shield Insurance Company.

She was the beloved wife of the late Richard L. Dunbar. Born in Somerville, the daughter of the late Carl W. and Margaret E. (Balcom) O’Neil, she was the devoted  mother of Donna B. Dunbar of Winthrop, Dana B. Olivar and her husband, Richard C. of Manchester, N.H., Dale R. Dunbar and his wife, Priscilla of Winthrop and the late Debra B. Digaetano; adored grandmother of Sunny Austin, Garret Olivar, Taylor Dunbar and Dawn Wood and great-grandmother of Idalis Austin, Jazel German and Kiliyan German. She was the dear sister of the late Carl O’Neil, Marilyn Walsh and Norma Stanton, and is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will take place in St. John the Evangelist Church, 320 Winthrop St., Winthrop, today, Thursday, June 21, from 4 to 8 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. John the Evangelist Church on Friday at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited. Cremation following the Mass will be private. Jean Winter

Hewlett Packard retiree

Jean F. (Vitale) Winter of Winthrop passed away on June 13. She was 82 years old.

Jean was a highly successful as a printed circuit board designer for Hewlett Packard in Waltham.

She was the beloved wife of the late Lewis J. “Brud” Winter of Winthrop, mother of Lewis J. Winter Jr., loving sister of Brenda (Barry) Corbett and her husband, Richard of Arlington and Ronald Vitale and his wife, Teresa of Naples, Fla. and loving aunt of several nieces and nephews.

Burial and funeral arrangements were private. Donations in her name can be made to the Alzheimer’s Assn. 480 Pleasant St. Watertown, MA. 02472.

Gretchen Salvesen

She thrived where she felt she could make a difference, and will be remembered for her loving spirit

Gretchen Salvesen of Arlington passed away on June 6 at the age of 54.

Gretchen was born in Boston in September of 1963 and grew up in Manchester-by-the-Sea. She was the youngest of five children, the beloved daughter of Janice (Roche) Salvesen of Winthrop and the late Dr. Lawrence C. Salvesen.

She graduated from the University of Massachusetts with concentrations in political science and Spanish. Gretchen studied abroad in Spain and Argentina, and through these experiences, she became proficient in Spanish and gained an appreciation for other cultures.

After college, Gretchen worked at the Massachusetts Migrant Program. This program provides educational and health services to children from migrant families. She thrived in jobs where she felt she could make a difference.

Gretchen lived in Arlington for the last two decades. She was known in her community for her friendly and generous nature. One of her strongest qualities was her ability to connect with people from different backgrounds. She had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed telling stories about her nieces and nephew. Gretchen cared deeply about her family and friends and she will be remembered for her loving spirit.

Gretchen was predeceased by her father, Dr. Lawrence Salvesen, her siblings, Michael C. and Andra Salvesen, her dear sister in law, Adeline Salvesen, and her maternal aunt and uncles, Monsignor William Roche, Virginia Murphy and Richard Roche.

The beloved daughter of Janice M. (Roche) Salvesen of Winthrop, she was the cherished sister of Kjerstin Salvesen and her husband ,Dr. Thomas Quinn of Lincoln, and Bryant Salvesen of Tyngsboro; adored aunt of Alexandra Salvesen, Liam Quinn, Mikaela and Birgitta Salvesen-Quinn. Gretchen is also survived by cousins, friends and her dog, Nico.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. John the Evangelist Church, 320 Winthrop Street, Winthrop, on Saturday, June 23, at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be private.
