Plastic Bag Petition Online
Dear Editor,
We have a single-use plastic bag ban online petition up on the Mother’s Out Front Winthrop web page.Ê Here is a link to the petition; Please send it to anyone you know who lives in Winthrop and ask them to sign.Ê We have a date to present to the Board of Health on Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. and to the Town Council directly afterward at 7 p.m. and it would be wonderful to have many signatures.Ê We have over 100 so far. Winthrop should join the other 81 communities in Massachusetts who have banned single use plastic bags.

Dear Editor,
I believe that the race for Suffolk County district attorney may be the most important race on the ballot in Winthrop on Sept. 4!
As someone who has spent most of my career concerned with the issues of public health and safety, including working as chief of staff to two Middlesex county sheriffs, it is vitally important that we choose the right person as our next district attorney.
I ask you to join me in voting for Shannon McAuliffe, who is running for Suffolk County District Attorney in the Democratic Primary.
Shannon McAuliffe is exactly the kind of district attorney that Winthrop and all of Suffolk County deserves, and she is a realistic progressive reformer who can definitely win this race. I know that Shannon has not only the knowledge and experience to help reform the system, but most importantly, she has the passion and desire to do so.
Shannon understands that the current status quo in the Suffolk County district attorney’s office is just not good enough! She was a public defender in Suffolk County for 12 years, and as Director of Roca in Boston and Chelsea, she helped young people caught up in the criminal justice system transform their lives.
As our DA, Shannon will drive the change needed to build a stronger, healthier, and safer community for us all. She will be smart and strategic on crime, not just tough on crime.
Shannon is not a politician. She did not decide to run only when the current district attorney decided not to seek re-election. She was in the race already because she believed it was time to have a conversation with voters about what really works in changing our criminal justice system.
As a first-time candidate, Shannon has been impressive, demonstrating the ability and the willingness to do what is necessary to win. She has worked non-stop across Suffolk County and has attended every forum to discuss the real issues that matter.
Shannon has secured a number of strong political endorsements, including Suffolk County Sheriff Steve Tompkins, and those of many local labor unions.
